CERT: Community Emergency Response Team needs YOU!

UP_LOYQK_D_20150516_0679_ghwvfqThe City of Eugene, City of Springfield, and University of Oregon are all working together to build a culture of preparedness in our community. Increasing our overall disaster resilence is the responsibilty of every community member. By providing tools and resources to our community members, we are working toward one goal – overall disaster preparedness.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

The recent New Yorker magazine article, The Really Big One,” about the possibility of a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in the Pacific Northwest has sparked intense public interest in emergency preparedness. We are hosting public forums to further explain earthquake preparedness, answer questions our community may have and empower our community with knowledge and resources.

You can also watch the recent University of Oregon presentation, in which experts explain the science behind earthquake hazards we face here in the Pacific Northwest, and what you can do to help lessen the impact of a major earthquake on you, your family, and your community.  Check out the video HERE

Are you prepared for the mega-quake?  OPB offers an excellent video and series of articles about exactly that – our preparedness, or lack thereof.  The series is titled “Unprepared“, and if offers a wealth of very useful information.  Check it out at:
