This is SUNA. Welcome to the Neighborhood!
We are happy to have you here in the SUN just south of campus. As a neighborhood, we are very proud of our historic homes, buildings and school, the gardens and landscapes, and the tradition of families, college students and seniors living side by side harmoniously.
While the neighborhood stays fresh with the annual change of college students and growing families, some things always remain the same–mostly a steadfast feeling that when you are here, you are home.
Architectural Tour
The City of Eugene was formally incorporated as a city in 1862, but was not actually named Eugene until 1889. In 1872 the state determined the Eugene would be the home of the University of Oregon but it had no money to purchase land or build. The residents of Eugene struggled to help finance the institution by holding numerous festivals, church socials, and produce sales. They raised $27,500 to buy eighteen acres of farmland. The University of Oregon was finally establish at it's current site in 1876 with the land purchase and the construction of it's sole building, Deady Hall.
Welcome to Historic the South University Neighborhood
The South University neighborhood connects important pieces of Eugene's history, from the Masonic Cemetery at the South, to the I.O.O.F. Cemetery to the north, and to the University of Oregon, which boasts one of the state's largest collections of historic buildings.
Land Use
The South University Neighborhood (SUN) is comprised of 54 residentially dense city blocks. Our neighbors are families with new babies and school age children, UO students, young and mid-life professionals, and retirees-- all who enjoy our paved sidewalks, historic architecture and proximity to downtown Eugene.
