The SUNA Disaster Preparedness Committee is recruiting people to help organize the neighborhood into small groups of 15-25 households using the Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) program.
MYN is a self-guided, 2-hour training that residents conduct by gathering with their immediate neighbors. This program promotes community resiliency for short-term disruptions and large disasters. It connects individual preparedness with preparedness on your block. Know who your neighbors are and who might need special assistance. When the emergency responders are overwhelmed, we will only have each other to rely on.
Groups of neighbors learn 9 essential steps to take immediately following a disaster. Neighbors also work to identify the skills and equipment they have that could be useful in a disaster. Additionally, neighbors develop a block map identifying neighbors with special needs and homes with important features such as gas service. The goal is to create a functional neighborhood team that would provide support within the immediate neighborhood until normal city services can be restored.
If you want to start a MYN group, we can suggest group boundaries for you and review the training materials you will need. Contact the SUNA Disaster Preparedness Committee by sending an email to the following:
